Richard Mifsud Now the dust has settled a wee bit I'd just like to make a couple of comments on tonight's match. The first one is the obvious one that both sides were absolutely immense and did their respective supporters, provinces and the Pro 14 proud. The second one is for Ulster. Your boys were just awesome today and there is a very bright future ahead for you. I really do see you competing for silverware in the not too distant future. John Cooney was brilliant today and I rather suspect that if Ulster had won he would have won MOTM. My final point is for Leinster. This season hasn't been brilliant despite the ridiculous lead in the Pro 14 and the problem has been in the top two inches. Today's challenge was the absolute best you could have had because it tested you mentally as well as physically. The important thing is that you prevailed and that mental toughness will hold you in good stead moving forwards. Not saying we'll win silverware but boy did our boys need that test. Our mental toughness is on a completely different (and better) level after that match. Finally to both sets of fans #chapeau

"This is a winnable game for Ulster." by Ciaran Duffy


Ulster have every chance in their Quarter Final against Leinster.  But they have to avoid beating themselves by going in with a defeatist attitude.  So often this season teams have come to Leinster and given it a go for a period of the game, but then given up.  Leinster are, and have always been when at their best, the kind of team that can suddenly put a 20 point gap between them and the opposition, because the tea, they are playing tires or slacks off, and Leinster go up a gear.  

 This season Dragons got blown away, Edinburgh got out muscled, Wasps got brushed aside, as did Ospreys, Bath were outpaced, Ulster themselves couldn’t keep up with Leinster (albeit a much-changed side), and Southern Kings were well beaten despite making a match out of the first 20 minutes.  Southern Kings and Dragons aside, those aren’t teams you can bank on beating easily.  Leinster remain unbeaten this year at home in all competitions, that’s one of the reasons they are European Champions.  

 It hasn’t all been easy.  As I said, Southern Kings made a real game of that first 20 minutes, Toulouse were stubborn and hard to break down before Leinster broke away, and Munster, despite going behind early, came back strong, and probably would’ve deserved an LBP.  

 The closest any team has come to beating Leinster at home this season is Connacht.  On a cold December night, the last home game of the season, a much changed Leinster side (the Champions Cup game against Bath having been the week prior) went out to battle, and were very nearly beaten.  The last game in the RDS of 2018 was going to end in a victory for Connacht based on 70 minutes of rugby, but the game would go into it’s 82nd minute with a late late try by Leinster.  

 While I said there in the Anglesea Stand, my usual seat, between blue and green, I was reminded of two Ireland – New Zealand games.  For most of the game it looked like 2016, the team in green were outplaying the favourites, who were missing some key players, and looked set for something famous.  Yet ultimately, it was Connachts 2013, so close, but outclassed by class.  Connacht should have won that game based on 7/8s of the match.  Ulster can learn two lessons from that.  

 Number one, go at Leinster.  Bundee Aki was relentless in Connachts near famous win.  Every player stepped up for the Westeners.  That’s what Ulster need, an all-around performance.  They need to be disruptive.  Toulouse disrupted Leinsters rhythm by making the pitch small and not providing any space.  Had Munster not conceded two early tries they would have found themselves in an advantageous position, and really did trouble Leinster in the Aviva in October.  In football, often times a smaller team can sit back and defend, and take a chance that comes along (Ireland 1 – 0 Germany, Euro 2016 Qualifier at the Aviva in 2015).  It’s the opposite in rugby, the weaker team have to be disruptive to the big guns, and need to not only not let them play their game, but forcibly play their own.

 The other thing Ulster need to do is stay switched on.  They can’t get caught out by a quick lineout, or leave big gaps.  This is Leinster playing European rugby at the Aviva, they will take advantage.  They will need to give everything they have for 80 minutes plus how ever many minutes over the clock ticks.  

 This is a winnable game for Ulster.  I wouldn’t call it 50/50, it never is away to Leinster, but I’d say it’s not much beyond 60/40.  Sexton and Lowe are out, two key omissions.  Ross Byrne passed the test against Munster in October, he’ll need another big showing.  He needs to be careful with his kicking game, Ulster have a tall back three capable of winning the ball and countering.  James Lowe is like Leinsters Jacob Stockdale, in that he seems to be able to score at any time.  The fact that Leinster are without Lowe, and Ulster have Stockdale gives them an edge on one wing going forward.  

 Winning is a habit, one Leinster have formed at home.  Just like Ulster need to do, Leinster need to force their game on Ulster.  It’s late in the day, the main event of a Saturday of big European games.  The players will be waiting around all day, and have seen how the other games play out.  Edinburgh – Munster is the wild card, and unpredictable early kick-off, and Saracens – Glasgow will either see a favourite progress or a shock that could inspire more.  This will likely come down to who gets to play their way.

Preview : Leinster v Ulster


Paul O'Connell, Ronan O’Gara, Keith Earls, Simon Zebo, Peter O’Mahony, Donncha O'Callaghan, David Wallace…why am I starting this preview with a list of Munster players past and present? Because all were involved on April 8, 2012 when a heavily unfancied Ulster side went down to Thomond Park and tackled their way to an historic victory. 

 Yes, yes, I know they went on to get trounced in the final by Leinster but the point is that you can be absolutely sure that Rory Best, the only Ulstermen involved both then and this Saturday*, will be using that quarterfinal triumph as inspiration to his fellow team-mates before they take to the field. 

 It needs to be made perfectly clear - Leinster might be reigning European champions, reigning Pro 14 champions, higher seed in this season's quarterfinals and far clear of Ulster in Conference B, but on any given day it is widely known throughout the continent that the northerners are capable of greatness. 

 And I would have said all of the above even if Johnny Sexton WAS playing on Saturday!  But he isn't, and I suppose we just have to accept that and move on.  

 One thing on which I have often harped is that it's a shame Irish provinces can't provide accountability for all squad players on team announcements (like a list of injured players including the location of injury and estimated length of absence) as many others do around Europe. 

 But anyway, to the matchday 23 for the weekend…I definitely have no complaints over our pack, particularly the front five.  With Devin Toner unavailable, it does make sense to solve our ongoing ‘ANZAC problem’ by plumping for Scott Fardy and JGP at the expense of James Lowe. 

 It's in the front row where we might be able to lay down a early marker, in the area of scrums as well as loose carrying where I reckon our 1-2-3 combo should have the edge. 

 Although I can't believe I'm saying this, if there was one area of the pack I might have a quibble it's Sean O’Brien? I honestly had to type the sentence out myself to see if the thought made any sense.  

 I just thought our back row in Cardiff a couple of weeks ago was overwhelmed and maybe Seanie could contribute more from the bench in the closing stages allowing Dan Leavy to patrol the breakdown from the kick off.  But is also very possible the Tullow Tank will prove me wrong with a return to his brilliant best and if so I'll be as happy as any Leinster fan.

 As for the backs, for all my disappointment at not seeing Johnny 10 involved, I still have no worries over Ross Byrne - he showed against Toulouse that these occasions don't bother him.  

 Where we will need absolute focus from start to finish is in our centre - Ulster have a great mix of guile, strength and speed in their backline so it will be crucial for us to snuff out their attack points quickly so a lot of responsibility rests on the shoulders of Messrs O’Loughlin and Ringrose. 

 An interesting call was made at fullback.  Clearly Rob Kearney is available, yet he lines out on the bench as Jordan Larmour sports the 15 jersey.  It kind of has me wondering if this is a European quarterfinal or a World Cup trial, but still on the plus side it's a good chance for Larmour to get some game time back there and no doubt our visitors will make a point of testing him to the fullest. 

 When it comes to a one v one battle I'm fascinated by the starting scrum halves.  John Cooney picked up some caps during the Six Nations but Luke McGrath will surely see this as an opportunity to remind everyone that he had a higher spot on the totem pole. 

 The bookies have Leinster winning by 13, and I can certainly see the logic in our being favourites.  But like I said earlier, with the right attitude there's every chance the Ulstermen can either seize the initiative in the early stages or grind us down with a solid bout of defence as they did seven years ago. 

 All that said I still think we should have enough to prevail on the day and I'm going for a Leinster win by 7-9 points, though it could well be tight right up to the final quarter. 

 Whatever happens it promises to be a cracking Irish provincial derby at the Aviva Stadium - if you're lucky enough to have a ticket be sure to get yourself decked head to toe in blue to help create the right atmosphere…even if you're an Ulster fan 😉 

 See you there!!!  Also while of course my loyalties prevent me from wishing the Ulstermen all the best on this European weekend, I can definitely do so for both Munster and Connacht - both have tricky away ties yet both are well capable of getting results.  JLP
