€1000 for a ticket to Ireland vs Wales on Sunday?

by Conor Murphy
(first piece for HarpinOnRugby)

Why should exclusive & valuable 6 Nations tickets be resold for profit by money-makers searching for a quick buck?

A first ever foray into the world of writing for me, borne out of necessity to offload some steam rather than desire.

At present, the IRFU will tell you that they have sold out of all tickets for the Ireland vs Wales game. According to the announced ticket allocation policy for this year, all tickets for the 6 Nations opener were initially circulated to the various clubs in the country. A select number of tickets were also made available to members of the Irish Rugby Supporters Club - which sold out within hours. Finally, any tickets that the clubs wished to return would be made available to the general public three weeks before the game. Naturally, none were returned.

I fully understand the ticket allocation to the IRSC. I also fully understand Leinster’s policy of making their allocated tickets available to season ticket holders via lottery. These are the people that deserve to be at 6 Nations games the most. My grievance is with the numerous third party sites currently selling tickets for extortionate prices. A simple Google search will return ticket prices above €1000 from third party websites. The most expensive ticket price listed by the IRFU is for €105. That’s a massive return on investment.

In my opinion, IRFU tickets should not be available for resale. The people who initially buy these tickets, be it a ticketing company or an enterprising individual, most likely have absolutely no intention of going to an Ireland match. They buy these exclusive tickets with the sole intention of making money. The end result is that thousands of supporters end up missing out on tickets so that someone can make some quick money.

I could perhaps understand the IRFU’s permission for resale if they were to profit from any sales, but the current system doesn’t seem to benefit anyone who has Irish Rugby’s best interests at heart. Speaking as someone who lives abroad and is only home for 2 months a year, it is pointless for me to have a Leinster season ticket. Despite my good attendance record at past Ireland & Leinster matches, it is impossible to get a ticket to a 6 Nations match for under €150.

If anybody wishes to offer me a free ticket for this weekend’s game in return for the fine piece of writing I have just produced, please feel free.

Aer Lingus aims to bring #HomeAdvantage wherever Ireland play

from Aer Lingus…

green spirit

Whether it be at home at the Aviva Stadium or on their travels Ireland supporters are renowned for creating an electric atmosphere with their passionate support.  In the coming weeks Aer Lingus will be tapping into that support and helping fans create #HomeAdvantage wherever Ireland play.

‘The official airline of the Irish rugby team’ will be transporting thousands of supporters to Paris and London for the games against France and England.

#HomeAdvantage is the national airline’s campaign, backing their partnership with the IRFU, which will be rolled out over the next two months.  The campaign launched today with the first in a series of videos centring on the #HomeAdvantage: wherever we play theme.

Follow this link to see the video

The video reflects the bond between the fans and the team and role the supporters play in making any venue feel like a home game.  It shows the how the fans are willing to travel far and wide to give the Irish team a sense of #HomeAdvantage.

Aer Lingus ambassadors Tommy Bowe, Robbie Henshaw, Rob Kearney and Conor Murray will play a central role in the campaign and feature heavily in the first video.

So too do the loyal fans including Gerry Gilligan from Clondalkin Rugby Club who appears in the opening frame of the video donning his ‘lucky socks’.  Ger is considered a ‘super fan’ as he has missed only five games since 1967!

In the coming weeks subsequent videos, which will be rolled out on Aer Lingus’ social media channels, will include  interviews with Ireland players Seán O’Brien, Donnacha Ryan and Jared Payne all talking about what exactly home advantage means to them.

Aer Lingus will also be helping fans to create that special atmosphere at airports around away match-days while Green Spirit, the aircraft specially decorated to back the IRFU partnership and showcasing images of the ambassadors, will be used to help fly supporters to the away games where they can get right behind the team.

Green Spirit will fly the Irish team to Paris and London for those away games.

Aer Lingus will be there at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday too where one lucky fan will win flights and match tickets to Paris for the France game allowing them to help bring #HomeAdvantage to the Stade de France.

#HomeAdvantage will be backed by media support including digital, social media, radio and a nationwide outdoor advertising campaign.

Aer Lingus is the Smart Choice for Ireland rugby supporters as they bring #HomeAdvantage wherever we play.

LOADS of extra rugby on Setanta Ireland this week...
pity nobody is covering the Irish women though.
I mean...it's not like they're champions or anything!
My take is that if RTÉ can't spare the time
(and I do understand they have a lot of sports to juggle)
they should step aside any let someone else cover it
