The Pro14 South African derby rounds by Ciarán Duffy



Toyota Cheetahs win the first two Pro14 South African derbies

While the rest of the Pro14 sides were away with Europe, Toyota Cheetahs and Southern Kings were facing off in the two games they had in hand over the rest of the league.  

Southern Kings were the home side in the first match.  Cheetahs started the scoring with a try from Clayton Blommetjies, converted by Fred Zeilinga.  Southern Kings responded with a Yaw Penxe try, Oliver Zono converted.  From there the rest of the half belonged to Cheetahs.  Zeilings kicked a penalty, and converted tries from Nico Lee and Shaun Venter.  

The 2nd half began with Lee getting the bonus-points try, Zeiling once again converting.  Southern Kings hit back when Cheetahs went down to 14.  Justin Basson was sent to the bin, Eital Bredenkamp got over the line with Oliver Zono converting.  Cheetahs had two more players sent to the bin, Charles Marais and Junior Pokomela were both shown yellow, Southern Kings were awarded a penalty try.  Cheetahs finished strong with Lee getting his hattrick and Jacques du Toit touching down, Zeilinga converted both tries.  Cheetahs won 21 – 45.

Cheetahs won their home match as well.  Zeilinga opened the scoring with a penalty.  Southern Kings got the first try of the game, with Luzuko Vulindlu getting over, Ntabeni Dukisa converted.  Cheetahs took the lead with tries from Nico Lee and Uzair Cassiem, both tries were converted by Zeilinga.  Schalk Ferreira got over for Kings with Dukisa convrteing, Lee responded for Cheetahs, Zeilinga converted.  Dukisa kicked a penalty to close out the half, Cheetahs led 24 – 17.

The 2nd half scoring began with a try for Cheetahs, scored by Ox Nche, converted by Zeilings.  The home side then had Craig Barry sent to the bin.  Despite being down a player they got another two tries, Makazole Mapimpi and Shaun Venter touched down, both tries were converted by Zeilinga.  Southern Kings had the final say with a try from Tienie Burger, converted by Benhard Janse van Rensburg.  IT finished 45 – 24 to Toyota Cheetahs.
