Ulster’s French jinx is Castres aside

It’s an exciting time to be an Ulster fan, writes Kristian Ross…

Ulster-Draw

So unfortunately no report this week due to the fact I don't have Sky Sports, which of course is greatly upsetting considering that Ulster Rugby won their first competitive game in France for the first time in history.

A 9-8 win over Castres Olympique at the Stade Pierre-Antoine was not only historic, but surely is a huge mental plus as the Heineken Cup starts to entire the knockout phases and the excitement starts to bubble even more.

Ulster's win showed not only that they can win in France, but that no matter what hard work and determination can do, finishing top of the pool, only losing one game, and setting up an away quarter final with English Premiership side Saracens.

It has to be said, it's disappointing that Ulster were unable to secure a home quarter at Ravenhill, but with current form the way it is, it's certainly a winnable game. Ulster now in my opinion are the only Irish side with a chance of winning Europe's premier competition. Current champions Leinster are out, and Harlequins will prove a stern test for Munster.

It's the third season running that the Ulstermen have made the quarters and it's possibly the best Ulster team since 99. Two defeats all season, Mark Anscombe must be sitting in his chair whooping with glee, the winning formula well and truly sussed. But it will be trophies that make or break this season, and Ulster should on current form take at least one. The belief is there, the quality is there, the fan base is there, and hopefully this brilliant rugby side will go all the way to the final like last year. Back to PRO12 duty for the next few months, and of course the Six Nations for some of the Ulster contingent in between. But no doubt about it... Everyone's eye is on Sarries, on the quarters, and on the side. Can they deliver? The next few months will tell us.

Stand Up For The Ulstermen.

I'm Kristian. 18. And my mind is filled with rugby shaped thoughts. Supporting Ulster Rugby, Newcastle Falcons and of course the mighty Ireland. Tommy Bowe is the MAN !!!! SUFTUM.
