Basically the new feature allows you to live score rugby matches at any level, and you can be sure we will be availing of it ourselves very soon!

Click the image below for more details.  Note - the phrases you will be asked to type during the week will be taken from that post so it might be worth a look so you'll be ready! ;-)

As always, to qualify for the competition you will have to stay tuned to the HarpinOnRugby Facebook page throughout the coming week and follow the instructions when the posts are published.  Below you will see a grid showing the days, times and number of qualifiers for each post.

Remember - there are TWO separate "unriggable raffles" this time, one taking place over each of the upcoming two weeks, with one copy of the book on offer to each winner.

The rugby matches which will provide the winning square for this competition are Leinster’s TWO Rugby Champions Cup clashes with Harlequins on Sunday, December 7 and Saturday, December 13, 2014.

The following extra rules are unfortunate but necessary.

  • the winner must provide an address on the island of Ireland

  • the competition winner will only be contacted via the social media account they used to qualify

  • only one entry per separate Facebook account is allowed each day, but it’s ok to enter once on each of the four days

  • each window closes 3 hours after posting – if all of the spots are not all taken, the extra ones will be allocated in a manner to be determined by the competition organisers.

  • when you are asked to leave an “exact phrase” this means you can use the phrase with OR without the quotes; also, since speed is a factor in the competition we will make allowances for typos once it is clear a decent attempt has been made to repeat the phrase

  • for some windows “edited” Facebook comments will not be permitted as entries…this will be outlined as part of the post where it applies

  • for transparency purposes your qualifying comment must remain on the social media post until at least two hours of completion of the rugby match that is to determine the competition winner.

  • be aware that Facebook have been known to display comments in a random order on the web; as competition organisers we will do all we can to ensure the timeline is properly followed in each window.

  • entrants’ positions on the grid are set and not open for discussion, nor are any other final decisions made by the competition organisers.

If you have any questions about the competition and/or its format or would like to sponsor one down the line, feel free to email we'd be happy to help.

BE SURE AND HAVE A GO AND BEST OF LUCK!!! JLP

    Leinster A-67 Carmarthen Quins-12

    TEN OUTTA TEN

Prior to this match Leinster A had scored 81 points in their previous 3 matches in Pool 5 of the British & Irish Cup.  But for an understandably merciful referee, they could have easily had more than that today, though I dare say Girvan Dempsey will be pretty satisfied with "just" the 67 on the back of ten tries!

This wasn't the first Donnybrook thrashing the A side have handed out and it probably won't be the last.  But much like the other one-sided affairs, the visitors showed a decent standard throughout in many areas and certainly never gave up the ghost altogether - it was in the area of defence where the difference told, and I mean more on our side than theirs.

I had a go at "liveblogging" the match from the main stand, click here to have a look.  I was certainly kept busy!  There would be no point in re-hashing all of the five-pointers here but I will pick what I felt was the pick of the bunch.

The scoreline hides the fact that the Welsh visitors had a fair slice of the territory throughout, crashing into the blue brick wall of our D more often than not.  From our own 22 shortly after a turnover, Cathal Marsh, who took a while to get going in open play but once he did he was nigh on unstoppable, spotted a gap in the first line of tacklers and laid it off to the pacy Mick McGrath who already had a try to his name.

It was still deep in his own half but you wouldn't have bet against McGrath to score even from there; yet he had Brendan Macken outside him and his intention was only ever to ship it on and Macken powered forward up the line before laying off a sweet pass back inside right into the stride of McGrath who stayed in support and from the halfway line there was nobody who was going to get near him.

Macken did well today I thought.  Though wearing 13 he spent a lot of time out wide and certainly did well when it came to him and indeed it was himself who opened the scoring.

You'd be tempted to say Man of the Match was an easy choice since our fullback Cian Kelleher bagged a hat-trick for himself but I'd be inclined to go for Marsh who did miss a few place kicks but also nailed some beauts from the touchline and like I said was clearly playing below his level once he settled into the match.

Maybe, just maybe, the visitors will feel the ref sold them short when they had a purple patch in the first half.  We shipped a load of penalties in that time and I think he was one penalty later than he could have been giving skipper Ross Molony a warning.

As it turned out we did see yellow in the second period when substitute Steve Crosbie knocked on - ref said it was intentional, I thought it was harsh, but as it turned out though the visitors did add a try to the one they got in the first half, it was while Crosbie was off the park that the Leinster try floodgates really began to open.

Then as the clock ticked towards the final minutes, it was Quins' turn to start concede pen after pen.  In "normal" circumstances, they could have had multiple yellows but I doubt anyone will have qualms over the ref (Craig Maxwell Keys of the RFU) holding back.

Overall it was a decent slog for the forwards...they were always on top in the scrums and since the visitors did their best to make the most out of every possession there was certainly a lot of tackling practice to be had.  There was just no way through.

So all told another fine outing for the reigning B&I Cup holders.  Jersey away next - I make it that any kind of a win there should win us the pool.  Did we learn much with regard to who is ready to move up to the A side?  Well I'd definitely say Marsh is ready for a Pro12 start.  When he gets it is anyone's guess.  JLP

    Preview : Leinster v Ospreys

So...here's how I left things at the end of my writeup of our match in Treviso last Sunday.
...Ian Madigan absolutely, positively, MUST start at 10 for Leinster against the Ospreys this weekend and beyond.  I'm going to leave it at that in case it doesn't happen and I can launch into my rant in my preview this Friday.
I didn't write that because I have anything against Gopperth.  Nor did I write it because I feel Madigan should always be preferred simply because he's Irish.  I wrote it because it seems to be the obvious choice based on form.  Clearly Matt O'Connor and his coaching staff disagree.

Now don't get me wrong...I don't think for a second that I know any better than they do...I'm sure they have their reasons.  It just seems strange that a player who is muscling his way into starting contention for the number 3 test team in the world can't play at his preferred position at his province.

Unless, of course, you consider the possibility that his long term future IS at 12 for the test side (and Leinster for that matter with Sexton returning?).  I mean - when you look at this particular Leinster lineup you notice two things... (1) both of our most-often-used 12s are on the bench and (2) there is an embarrassment of riches in the versatility department along the backline so there are many different ways the same players could have been utilised.

Well, whatever the reason, I suppose I wouldn't be doing anyone any favours by actually going on a prolonged rant over one position.  Leinster really need the win this Saturday and the key to this will be whether or not there is enough leadership on the park to get the job done.

Eoin Reddan lines out as captain after also doing so for his country against Georgia.  He seemed to be very mindful of his role that day and hopefully he can do likewise this time around, though for me it's his role keeping the play moving that will be crucial.

The Ospreys tend to do well on defence whether they have all their internationals or not.  They fell short against the Ulstermen last Friday but were it not for a silly crossing penalty shipped late in the game they may very well have pinched it.

One thing you can always say about these pesky birds, they'll give it their all for the full 80 minutes, which means you have to be sure and make your chances count.

So given all of that, it is imperative that our halfbacks stay on top throughout, and they will have their work cut out against Roberts & Davies who were key in dragging the O's back into the match in Belfast.  There's no point pretending that there is going to be a whole lot of width on our part, but that said, in Fanning and Kearney The Younger we have two good finishers under the current regime.

Plus, in some ways for all our despair over Madigan at 12 we can at least be thankful that with him and McFadden (when we saw Ferg laid out at the Aviva against Munster never dreamed he'd be back so soon) minding the centre channel things should be a lot more solid than last weekend in Italy.

This is a unique fixture for this much-maligned competition as it has seen a rivalry develop organically over the years.  And I don't expect the intensity to be any less this Saturday than it has been in the past.  But to prevail, Leinster need more than just internationals returning to the lineup.

The battle will more than likely be at its fiercest in the back row.  There was talk of Justin Tipuric making the Ospreys side but even though this didn't happen, their trio of Bearman, Lewis and Baker are well capable of causing mischief and given Jordi Murphy is our most-capped starter, we will need to not only hit the ground running but also stay on the right side of referee Mitrea.

So I suppose all that leaves for us to do it sit tight and wait for the action to begin.  Back in the Heineken Cup meeting in January a sill Ian Evans yellow helped victory fall into our laps, but you certainly cannot count on similar happening again.

The bookies have us 14 point winners.  Sorry, I know I should be positive, and I know they've been scarily accurate this season, but I can't see us hitting that.  My gut is telling me we'll get the win but with less than four tries and by 5-7 points.  As always, I will be delighted for the turf accountants to be proven right again!

OSPREYS : 15 Dan Evans 14 Aisea Natoga 13 Andrew Bishop 12 Hanno Dirksen 11 Tom Grabham 10 Sam Davies 9 Martin Roberts
1 Marc Thomas 2 Sam Parry 3 Dmitri Arhip 4 Lloyd Peers (Capt) 5 Tyler Ardron 6 Joe Bearman 7 Sam Lewis 8 Dan Baker
REPLACEMENTS 16 Scott Otten 17 Gareth Thomas 18 Cai Griffiths 19 Rynier Bernardo 20 Ieuan Jones 21 Tom Habberfield 22 Josh Matavesi 23 Dafydd Howells

The following players were unavailable due to international commitments:  Scott Baldwin, Dan Biggar. Aaron Jarvis, Alun Wyn Jones, James King, Justin Tipuric and Rhys Webb.

The following players were unavailable for selection through injury: Morgan Allen – Ankle, Ashley Beck – Soft tissue, Ryan Bevington – Groin, Ifereimi Boladau - Knee, Jeff Hassler - Ligaments, Duncan Jones –Ligaments, Ross Jones – Ligaments, Nicky Smith – Pectoral tear, Tom Smith – Knee, Jonathan Spratt - Knee, De Kock Steenkamp – Achilles, Eli Walker - Ankle

Sidenote : we love the way the Ospreys give the status of their entire squad when they announce their lineups.  Even if they're being "economical with the truth" in some cases, something is definitely better than nothing when it comes to info!

Thanks to our narrow defeat against "Carmarthen" (I use quotes because  in reality it's more of a Scarlets A side with players borrowed from different clubs) in October, our B&I Cup pool 5 is wide open as you can see from the table...

    2JERSEY479829
    3CARM QUINS372778
    4PLYMOUTH479967

Plymouth Albion did Leinster a big favour in beating Jersey last night...now if we win our two home games we shouldn't need anything from our trip to the Channel Islands in our final fixture in the pool.

And Quins aren't just a threat in this competition...back home in Wales they are second in the Premiership with seven wins out of eight so that plus their triumph over us will see them coming to Dublin a lot more confident than many teams we have seen at old HQ over the years.

It is definitely an interesting lineup Girvan Dempsey is sending out, with several players looking to prove they should be in contention for the first team.  Luke McGrath leads out the side (giving Leinster two scrum half captains this weekend) and Cathal Marsh has a nother chance to show what he could possibly do at Pro12 level.

On the wings there is an abundance of pace in Mick McGrath and Sam Coghlan-Murray and I will be surprised if at least one of them doesn't get on the scoresheet.

But since this year for the first time we see B&I matches taking place on Pro12 weekends, it means that with players being rested on top of injuries, the squad is stretched further than it ever has so it will be interesting to see how quickly they can gel together on the day.

History suggests that we generally come out well on top in these matches...hopefully this encounter will be no different.

We're planning to have a go at "Liveblogging" the match - stay tuned to HarpinOnRugby on social media for a link to a page where you should be able to see updates throughout the contest.  Fingers crossed all the technology works!

Leinster Rugby Announces All New Mobile Seat Upgrades

    from Leinster Rugby...

First European Sports Team to Rollout Technology from
    US-based Experience

Leinster Rugby announced today the launch of an all-new seat upgrade system on the Leinster Rugby mobile app. The new platform, implemented in conjunction with American mobile technology company, Experience (expapp.com), and the Ireland-based beacon engagement platform, XtremePush (xtremepush.com), will enable supporters that attend Leinster matches in the RDS Arena and Aviva Stadium to instantly upgrade their seat via the Leinster Rugby app.

The new feature will launch at Leinster's Guinness PRO12 match this Saturday, 29 November, in the RDS against Ospreys.  For the launch of the new upgrade system, supporters who have signed up through the App will be invited to upgrade their seat for free at this game.

As an innovative sports brand, Leinster will also deploy XtremePush's beacon technology to deliver with pinpoint accuracy the most relevant seat upgrade opportunities to their supporters' mobile device while in the stadium.

Speaking about the new seat upgrade system, Leinster Rugby's head of commercial and marketing, Paul Dermody said: "We're delighted to have worked with Experience and XtremePush to launch this new feature for our supporters, which will further enhance the Leinster Rugby match day experience. Supporters can now upgrade their seat at the RDS or Aviva through the Leinster Rugby iOS and Android apps, whether they want to get a different perspective on the game, sit closer to some friends or just get some shelter from the rain, the option is now there for them on match day.”

Ben Ackerman, Experience president, also noted: "We are happy to announce Leinster Rugby as our first team partner in Europe.  Working with them to launch seat upgrades has been seamless and we are confident supporters at Saturday's match, and all future home games, will embrace the new offering.  To have such a stellar launch partner in Leinster Rugby gives Experience a tremendous advantage as we expand our presence in Europe and provide fans abroad with the best possible event experiences.”

Signing up is simple. Once you download the Leinster Rugby App and submit your details, you will then have the option at all Leinster Rugby home games going forward to upgrade your seat. There is no need to print out a new ticket; the process takes place through your mobile phone that must be displayed to a steward on match day to access your new seat.
