It hasn’t been a great week or two for Leinster rugby fans so I asked three of them to join me for a session of soul searching.  I did my best to find positives in my writeup but the lads did a good job of bringing me back to reality.  We also talked about the social media ban from the weekend with a bit of Lions chat thrown in as well for good measure.

Podcast : S02E013 : “Thinking outside the box-kick : Big Joe Shep on JGP”

Listen to the pod using the player above or better still,
subscribe to our feed we're on most major platforms

In this week’s Harpin writeup I talked about the Player Of The Match performance of Jamison Gibson-Park, so I thought I’d use this pod to expand on those thoughts and joining me is Big Joe Shep, who has a thing or two to say about scrum halves and box kicking but just about manages to put them aside for a decent chat on the Irish-qualified Kiwi and where he might fit down the line for both Leinster and Ireland.

THE POD OF THREE #8 : “Introducing The Leinster Laighin via Three Blokes A Ball & BOD and its other spinoffs”

For this episode things are going to be a little bit different.  On Thursday, May 28 at 8:30pm I’ll be joining up with Big Joe Shep from the excellent Facebook Live offering Three Blokes A Ball & BOD for a new show called The Leinster Laighin where we’ll be looking to merge the Leinster-focused approach of HarpinOnRugby with Big Joe’s trademark global reach brand.  So for this pod I’m going to share some snippets from Joe’s productions in recent times - first he’s chatting to Gerard Williamson from Navan RFC about the All Ireland League and club rugby in general - Gerard will actually be joining us on our first show to talk about his club.  There there’s snippets from a couple of live events that I did for Joe; first you’ll hear a way over the top introduction he gave for me at the Sandymount Hotel ahead of the 2019 Heineken Cup Final, and then you’ll hear the moment I completely jinxed Ireland’s World Cup chances at the DTwo Bar & Night Club on Harcourt Street.  Finally there’s a clip from another Three Blokes spinoff, namely The Keego & Joe Show, where they chat to Penny Mitsi, a rugby coach, trainer, sporting ambassador & who is part of the development of rugby within Greece.

PODCAST : Ep 49 : Jerseys - the craft beer of rugby fandom (featuring Neil Keegan & Joe Sheppard)

For the next couple of weeks we’re turning our attention to the subject of rugby jerseys.

On our twitter account @HarpinOnRugby we’re running a light hearted competition called the Leinster Jersey McJerseyface Cup whereby followers get to vote for their favourite design.

In this pod, first I’ll be chatting to Neil ‘Keego’ Keegan about the general topic of rugby jerseys, then Big Joe Sheppard, creator of Three Blokes A Ball & BOD, will give his own views as well as outlining what our upcoming Facebook Live shows are going to be about.

The jersey Keego talks about is our pod picture.

Preview : Leinster v Glasgow (PODCAST)

On Friday morning I went to Energia Park in Donnybrook to watch the Irish Men’s and Under 20s teams being put through their paces in an Open Training session.  I met up with long time Harpin contributor Joe Sheppard, now of Three Blokes A Ball & BOD fame, as well as Conor Cronin.  Afterwards I took the opportunity to head for a coffee at Insomnia Donnybrook where we had a quick chat about the effect of the Italy postponement on Ireland’s Six Nations campaign, as well as looking ahead to Glasgow’s visit to the RDS.

For the record, my prediction is closer to Joe's I reckon Leinster can run out 8-10 point winners; looking for the Warriors to bring it but for the likes of Harry Byrne, Will Connors & James Lowe to respond and then some.  Hope to see you there!  JLP

PS : Full disclosure...for some reason I kept saying "Three Balls..."  instead of "Three Blokes...", thus literally making a balls of it, so I "fixed" it in the editing process; the transitions aren't exactly subtle but it sounds much better than with the gaffes!!! 😜

Also, please forgive the hustle and bustle in the background at the coffee shop!!!

JOE'S HARPIN BIO :

Joe SHEPPARD is an avid Leinster & Ireland Rugby fan who came to rugby at the late age of 24, was a tight head prop, had at least 2 good runs in every game and retired at only 36 after 3 operations on his legs. He now forms the 4th "virtual" person in a front row each time his beloved teams are playing (much to the annoyance of his suffering girlfriend who has to put up with being "embraced" by the Big Fella at each scrum!!!)

To round off our chat Joe has a go at our game called Association Rugby, where I fire 10 rugby terms at him in quick succession to see what he says in return.  Here's what I gave him...

Six Nations Round 3 according to Big Joe Shep

                  BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT:

France & Italy were dire……….Ireland strong, determined and left the Welsh Dragon breathless. Scotland retained the Calcutta Cup, the Raeburn Shield, the moral high ground and sent the English “Homewards tae think again!!”

                  PREVIEW:

Well what ANOTHER W/E of rugby!!!! Well deserved wins for France over italy, Ireland against a spirited Wales & for the second round in a row, the game and team of the round was Gregor Townsend's Scotland who absolutely played England off the park to win The Calcutta Cup for the first time in 10 years!!
Very little in the way of Contention, Debate, Furore, Conjecture, Anger et al (Well read my AND FINALLY para to counter this??)..........however there was PLENTY of Frustration (for Italy, Wales & especially England), Jubilation (for France, Ireland and especially Scotland) complete ranges of Emotion (for all concerned, fans, players, pundits and coaches alike) and of course there was some absolutely outstanding Rugby Union!!
                  Soooooooo let’s recap Round 3,

                  FRANCE 34 v ITALY 17:

Well not exactly an inspiring game of rugby TBH with France looking to end a 2 match losing streak playing for the first time outside of Paris at the Stade Velodrome, Marseille however with the stadium less than full, an indication perhaps of the current malaise in French Rugby certainly at the National level. Added to this, a handful of players dropped after their extra-mural activities in Edinburgh following their loss to Scotland and apart from 2 well crafted tries, overall, they lacked much of a threat. Italy for their part appeared to have run out of steam after spirited performances against Ireland & England.

My MOTM was returning French Centre, Mathieu Bastareaud. Powerful in direct contact and such a powerful beast at the breakdown, he delivered a superb one-handed offload for Hugo Bonneval’s try. Simply the outstanding French player. How will he get on against stronger opposition?? Time will tell but in this game, it was the correct standout call.

Italy lacked a coherent team approach. Skipper Parisse is looking tired and that impacted on the Italians. They do however have a “New” talisman it appears, Benetton Treviso s Blindside Flanker, Sebastian Negre who really stood up and was the standout for a disappointing Italian side. Once again, the short sighted, small minded armchair pundits are already calling for Italy to be hoofed out of the 6 Nations YET they are probably not even aware of Conor O’Sheas 5 Year plan to help build Italian Rugby from the ground up……………….NOR are they even aware of the huge improvement of both Italian Regional sides in this years Pro 14, but hey.

                  IRELAND 37 V WALES 27:

Well initially this game was supposed to be a relatively easy win for the Irish however with 3 british & Irish Lions out injured for Ireland and 3 of the same returning for Wales, as last week went on, the doubts for many grew. We had to also bear in mind that both Ireland and Wales record at home against each other hasn’t been convincing.

Ireland though played some very confident rugby, choosing as ever to channel their efforts through the middle. Sexton had a rare off day with his kicking but hey he’s JS10, he’s allowed to! The positives greatly outweighed the negatives with Ireland putting away 5 Tries for a BP win keeping us at the top of the table. The loss of Lions Prop Tadhg Furlong had been a concern however replacement Tight Head Andrew Porter was excellent in the scrum, loose, carrying. A fantastic start to his first full irish start. Devin Toner in the 2nd Row played all round better than I’ve seen in a while which meant we didn’t miss Iain Henderson that much and MOTM Chris Farrell was simply outstanding in all aspects replacing injured Robbie Henshaw for the Centre partnership with Bundee Aki.The try scoring Wing of young Ulster man, Jacob Stockdale (and not DAVID STOCKDALE as reported by The UK Telegraph??) took a brace and his tally to 8 in 7 games for Ireland.

The negatives (and I’ve been saying this for a while!!) was that we were again caught narrow by the central featuring game and were caught out for 2 of the 3 Welsh tries. Given the capacity of both Scotland and England to open up wide, quickly and at phenomenal speed, it’s a MUST MUST MUST “Work ON” as Ireland Coach Joe Schmidt would call it in the next 2 weeks. Certainly Irish Defence Coach, Andy Farrell will be less than happy shipping another 3 tries for the second game in succession. That put is in a self-imposed difficult situation late on when we should have been home and dry. That lack of defensive positioning out wide IS and REMAINS a concern for Ireland.

Fair play to Wales though, I felt they started slow, outplayed us wide, the kicking game, finished very strong but lacked an overall co-ordinated approach they had against both Scotland and England. The Welsh pack came off very much second best with Ross Moriarty particularly struggling and Dan Biggar most contributions after returning from injury were constantly appealing to the Referee???

                  SCOTLAND 25 V ENGLAND 13:

For the second successive round, Scotland produced both the game of the round and the performance of the round thereby quietening some of the lesser professional as well as armchair pundits as to their longevity as a team who could rise up as a credible threat after their demolition by Wales in Round 1. Two Rounds further on the Lion Rampant is very much……….Rampant!!

A brace of tries from Scotland’s Huw Jones and another from Sean Maitland saw off the English at Murrayfield. Scotland totally outclassed a poor English side who appeared in the main to be individuals. Scotland simply over ran them in the breakdown and were far much more up for the scrap. Their passion and intensity were just too much and England leaked tackles, penalties, turnovers and more besides. The crowd were behind Scotland and every time the Scottish turned a ball over it was as if a try had been scored. There wasn’t the usual conjoined look of the Farrell / Ford partnership. Lawes was particularly weak as Flanker. I had opined before that I felt he’d be better as 2nd Row Lock and Itoje as Flanker bur hey Eddie J knows best lol. It was a very un-England like performance all round to be fair.

In addition, Farrell had a pre-match bust up with Scotland’s No 8 Ryan Wilson and most certainly England’s replacement No 8 Sam Underhill will be cited to go along with his yellow card for a crazy shoulder-lead charge? I predict at least a 3 week ban!

A superb display then and a well deserved victory for Scotland. It’s one that sets them up with a chance still in the championship now. They move onto Dublin in 2 weeks time with Ireland then a final away game at Italy. They’ll be feeling pretty happy where they are currently. A win in Dublin could see them potentially achieve the impossible!

                  CONCLUSION:
Yet another fantastic weekend of 6 nations Rugby! There's a 2 week break until Round 3 however our weekly rugby roundup, “3 BLOKES, A BALL & BOD” will be on as usual this Thurs at 2100Hrs / 9PM GMT where we will be looking at a review of this W/E plus look at the potential permutations left for this year and who is going to come out on top?
                  AND FINALLY……..

This is rugby. I know times are changing but there’s some things creeping in that hitherto haven’t (to my mind) been there. England being booed as their coach arrived at Murrayfield, Scottish fans booing during the national anthem, players relentlessly screaming at the ref for penalties even Irish players weren’t singing one or other of the 3 anthems on Saturday etc etc etc.
If I was a coach, I’d be speaking out publicly against all this behaviour. Set an example. The French did after their players shenanigans in Edinburgh. I don’t care for your politics, respect the anthems, don’t hijack them. Play the game not the referee. Fans remember what rugby is all about.
Till the next time, stay safe, be happy and remember when it’s over it’s just a bit of banter and craic we need.

                  The Big Fella

Joe SHEPPARD is an avid Leinster & Ireland Rugby fan who came to rugby at the late age of 24, was a tight head prop, had at least 2 good runs in every game and retired at only 36 after 3 operations on his legs. He now forms the 4th "virtual" person in a front row each time his beloved teams are playing (much to the annoyance of his suffering girlfriend who has to put up with being "embraced" by the Big Fella at each scrum!!!)

Six Nations Round 2 according to Big Joe Shep

Well what W/E of rugby!!!! Wins for England, Ireland & a superb display by Scotland in the game of the round against France.

Debate, Furore, Conjecture, Anger, Frustration, Jubilation, Emotion and some great rugby!! Everything you'd want from the greatest game in the world.

                  Soooooooo to Round 2,

                  IRELAND v ITALY:

Well we started off with an opening game that gave us a game of expansive flowing rugby. Ireland scoring tries at will in the first half. They lost Tight Head Prop Furlong after only 4 Minutes but it looks like it may have only been a slight twinge with his hamstring. Andrew Porter made an extremely able replacement carrying well throughout. Worse though, was losing Centre Robbie Henshaw who dislocated his shoulder scoring his second try and is likely to be out for the rest of the season.

The first half really was all about Ireland. A pretty lacklustre Azzurri side made heavy work of trying to gain any worthwhile ground. The second half saw a number of changes for the Irish and the introduction of some of the younger element including Leinsters Joey Carbery and explosive young talent, 20 year old Jordan Larmour. Larmour had two stand out aspects to his debut 35 mins of international rugby. A sublime jinking run showed the crowd the same skills he has been dazzling the Leinster & Pro 14 followers this season. However, his inexperience let him down when he missed a tackle on Mimozzi that eventually lead to an Italian try. He like the other youngsters carbery and Stockdale are all outstanding talents in development and will continue to learn the step up to international level is not easy. They REALLY excite though!

Ireland did lose their composure at times in the second half and in between the usual errors, the Italians played some excellent rugby. They picked up 3 tries and those 19 Pts whilst welcomed as signs of continued improvement for The Azzurri, may well affect Ireland come the business end of the competition. Time will tell?

Overall a very solid display display for Ireland and much to take away for the Italians. The absolute standout moment for me was the 65 Metre chase back by Irish winger Keith Earls to stop the Italians scoring a 4th and what would have been their FIRST ever BP in the 6 Nations.

                  ENGLAND v WALES:

Well this was touted pre-match as being the game of the round however for me is was in the main a pretty drab affair, affected by the weather. Others will have seen it differently I’m sure? England started with their trademark pacey opening 10 - 15 minutes game using the ball wisely and looking for any and every opening. The ever improving Farrell whose vision, tactical awareness & strength continue to improve massively (yes…...credit where it’s due!!) set up Johnny May with a neatly chipped kick into an ocean of space for their opening try following the first of a myriad of mistakes from Wale’s Rhys Patchell. Clearly the Eddie Jones mind tricks earlier in the week against Patchell had that ealy effect.

England and May scored a second try and Patchell added to his woes by missing a penalty kick. The pace was pretty unrelenting given the poor conditions and actually Wales pushed hard and ended the first half on the upwards momentum. It wasn’t nonetheless a spectacular viewing game for me? The debate over whether Gareth Anscombes try should have been allowed will go on and on and on and on ……………..especially if it affects the outcome of the competition?? The TMO said no!! The TV, video clips, analysis, still photographs ALL appear to tell a different tale but the decision was NO TRY!!!!!!!!!!!

The second half saw a valiant Welsh side push England and they had a number of chances to score but the English defence was to be fair pretty stoic. It wasn’t pretty but I suppose it was a good old fashioned England v Wales test match? The highlight of the game for me though and completely overshadowed because of #TRYGATE was Sam Underhill saving the game for England as Scott Williams slid in for a try but Underhill who had raced across, got a hand under Williams body and that momentum was enough to take them both into touch. It was an absolutely superb piece of defensive play from the american born Bath Rugby Flanker. England saw the game out 12 - 6.

                  SCOTLAND v FRANCE:

The outstanding game of the round was at Murrayfield were both Scotland and France had points to prove after Round 1 defeats. The game started, continued and ended with the same frenetic pace. It was an outstanding game of test match rugby. Apart from Finn Russell who had a complete mare of a game, Scotland were in great form and running lots of the same slick handling & off loading balls style of rugby we have seen from Glasgow Warriors this season. It was a side about as far apart from last week that you could imagine.

MOTM was Scotland’s scrum Half Greig who Laidlaw kicked 22 Pts in a 32 - 26 win which was a fantastic comeback having trailed at half time 14 - 20 to two Teddy Thomas tries and penalties from Maxime Machenaud. France’s Thomas carried on where he left off against Ireland in Round 1, with 3 scottish players missing tackles as he jigged and weaved his way through.

Scotland matched France throughout the game, punishing them with penalties for almost every infringement and eventually Laidlaw put them ahead. They were are far better disciplined and focused team from 7 days ago. Mentally Gregor Townsend put them in a better place and there;ll be a sterner test for England in Round 3 in 2 weeks time.

For the French, they lost the game as much as scotland won it. Errors and  effectively a team of individuals showed they still have some way to go to become a force to be reckoned with.

                  CONCLUSION:

Yet another fantastic weekend of 6 nations Rugby! There's a 2 week break until Round 3 however our weekly rugby roundup, “3 BLOKES, A BALL & BOD” will be on as usual this Thurs at 2100Hrs / 9PM GMT where we will be looking at a review of this W/E plus the Women's 6 Nations to date and more besides.

                  AND FINALLY……..

GOOD DAYS, BAD DAYS & RIGHT MARE DAYS:

Here’s a thought for us all! Players will have good, bad & mare days………...just ask both Rhys Patchell and Finn Russell after this round of games. Coaches can have good bad & mare days……ask Eddie Jones after interfering (again!) with World Rugby over Alun Wyn Jones last week……...mind games or poor judgement??............ Refs and assistant referees can have good, bad & mare days…….. Ask Nigel Owens after the France v Ireland game last week…….TMOs can have good, bad & mare days…..ask the N.Zealand TMO after this weeks England v Wales game and #TRYGATE……..even match day doctors can have good, bad & mare days……..ask the French match day doctor from the France v Ireland game last week who got confused between a head & a knee…..our match day analysts & pundits can have good, bad & mare days…….ask Stuart Barnes who kept calling Greig Laidlaw GREGOR during the Lions tour of NZ this past summer………….and of course WE the avid followers, fans, club level players and armchair pundits have good, bad & mare days………….. Just look at FaceBook!!!!

…….what sets us apart from every other sport I believe is that when all said and done, we shake hands on or off the field, we applaud the other team, the other views or thoughts or our friends and protagonists, we RESPECT the referee and EACH OTHER, we have a drink together either physically or virtually and remember the days when we were together enjoying the craic, the banter, the love of all things oval. OUR love of rugby!!

In 2 weeks time, we’ll start all over again. There’ll be other issues, points & incidents to debate in Rounds 3, 4 & 5 that’s for sure. That will as ever once again kick it all off in the virtual & physical worlds and #TRYGATE and everything else that’s past will be just that...in the past.

As the legendary Jim Royle would say, “Pass The Custard Creams Barb, It’s All Kicking Off On Facebook”
Stay Safe, & Be Kind To Each Other
                  Cheers
                  The Big Fella 😎

Joe SHEPPARD is an avid Leinster & Ireland Rugby fan who came to rugby at the late age of 24, was a tight head prop, had at least 2 good runs in every game and retired at only 36 after 3 operations on his legs. He now forms the 4th "virtual" person in a front row each time his beloved teams are playing (much to the annoyance of his suffering girlfriend who has to put up with being "embraced" by the Big Fella at each scrum!!!)

Six Nations Round 1 according to Big Joe Shep

Well a little back to basics for me again, writing for the excellent Harpin On Rugby as well as doing our own LIVE broadcasts on FaceBook , “3 Blokes, A Ball & BOD!” every Thursday at 9PM GMT (shameless plug but hey!)

                  Soooooooo to Round 1,

                  WALES v SCOTLAND:

Well the awesome atmosphere at Principality Stadium was everything you would expect. Wales opened up sharp with every intent to play an open attacking and running style of rugby. Not surprising given 10 of their starting XV were from the Scarlets side playing so well in both Europe and the Pro 14.

From Gareth Davies intercepting a Scotland pass to score a 60 Metre try in the 4th minute to Steph Evans brilliant one handed acrobatic dive to gives Wales their BP try, they took every opportunity Scotland gave them.

MOTM Aaron Shingler, Josh Navidi and Ross Moriarty produced a dominant display in their first match together in the Welsh back row. Rhys Patchell only in because of injuries to both Rhys Priestland and Dan Biggar was outstanding and for me well deserves to keep his place. His vision, handling and cross field kicking all tested the Scots to the full.

And it would be remiss not to mention the overall pay of Full Back Leigh Halfpenny. After 5 years and 38 Tests he scored for Wales…...not once but twice! His overall play and kicking were perfect.

From a Scottish perspective they were their own undoing. Handling errors, temperament and mindset all conspired to make the well deserved Welsh victory better than it was. Now that’s NOT taking anything away from Wales, merely an observation on how easily Scotland made it at this level. They were a shadow of the team that hammered Australia and came close to turning over the All Blacks in last autumn's internationals. It was like Wales were playing against an U20s sunday side. Scotland had a team of XV individuals. despite having more of the ball throughout the first half, skipper John Barclays face on a number of occasions throughout the game (especially when he was giving away penalties!) and in the post match interview pretty much summed up Scotland’s day. Coach Gregor Townsend has much to do before their next game at home to France!

                  FRANCE v IRELAND:

Well pre-match, much was made of the disorganised, youthful French side, even with a 19 year old outstanding debutant Fly Half etc etc. Coupled with the fact that Ireland strength in depth squad and previous results over the last 2 years against Tier 1 opposition were clear contenders for this years championship and that we should get across the line in a relatively easy manor?? Did we forget that we say this about EVERY French team EVERY season yet despite them not winning silverware for 10 years they have NOT been beaten in France in their opening game this decade………”The Best Laid Plans Of Mice & Men” springs to mind

Conservative, safe play by Ireland. Lots of Bish, Bash, Bosh play by Ireland. Slow to get the ball out of the rucks etc at times Ireland. Wasteful box kicks majority of the time Ireland and a game plan of kick for points and try to stifle the French & not allow them to get any runs in that might just sneak them a try. Er……..well again ……..”Of Mice & Men!”  eh?? Now whether the rain forced Ireland to play that style of game management I don’t know but that’s what happened. Would that be enough to get us over the winning line!?! Yes but phew…...

Now, that said there was some good play. I thought Earls when he did get the ball attempted to run at the French, Aki was pretty solid, Stander was his usual boisterous self and I particularly thought John Ryan at Lock showed some glimpses that he’ll be a starter for a while to come. I think he offers a lot more overall than Dev Toner can.

I thought the French did well in the scrum and at lineouts. They were disorganised in the main but as the game went on you could just feel that if Ireland didn’t put a couple of decent scores on the board the French would sneak something and Et Voila!! There was NO real stand out player on either side for me if I’m honest. The stand out moment for France was the Teddy Thomas run and try, junking inside past a plethora of Irish players, of whom young Jacob Stockdale will learn a few lessons that even as a Winger he needs to learn about D and work on that quickly if he’s to survive at top level.

But there has been enough written, shouted & whoop whooped about the final couple of minutes. 41 phases, 82nd minute and not only one of THE best drop goals of all time by JS10 but the cahoonas as part of that build up with a pin point cross field kick just shows the class and belief of the man. If we go on to win the title then this is where it was won…….. by never ever ever ever quitting.

                  What did disappoint me AGAIN as they did against Wales last year in the #100minutegate debacle was how France got away with flouting the Head Injury Assessment (HIA) Protocols, firstly with Fly Half Jalibert who came off second best to a powerful Bundee Aki and then Antoine Dupont late on in the game. Both went off with CLEAR knee injuries but were assessed (apparently by the match doctor) as being HIA?? Sexton was pretty incandescent with ref Nigel Owens but our Nige (who TBH didn’t have his best day at the office) was told it was the decision of the match doctor to which he had no other option to take!!  Former Canadian captain Jamie Cudmore, whose foundation looks at HIA and player safety retweeted the following and i’ll leave it to World Rugby to see what (if anything) happens;

                  ITALY v ENGLAND:

Well as expected England came out flying. Some sublime handling, line speed and deft wrap arounds saw Winger Anthony Watson go in for his first of 2 tries in the 4th minute. All perfectly executed training ground plays. His second was pretty similar and Farrell ran through a lacklustre Italian defence for Englands third. A serious injury to Ben Youngs though meant England lost some of their impetus.

Italy never gave up, showed spirit and came back with a well taken try and a penalty to see them only 7 - 17 down at half time. They took the penalty when I believe Parisse felt they weren’t going to get over the try line. This was disappointing and the issue with the Italians was discipline, lack of cohesiveness (7 new players in the side perhaps showing that) and the biggest aspect was they failed to have a fellow player tight on a runners shoulder when they did push forward.

Whilst England routed the Italians with 7 tries and a 46 - 15 win, they never got out of 4th gear and the Italians pushed hard on occasions but again it was in the main disjointed. Good standout performances from MOTM Watson and Sam Simmonds who has some speed for a No 8 but there’s potential for other teams to take the game to England. They’re good but they are capable of being beaten. There are frailties there!
