Rugby Europe Championship Update by Ciarán Duffy




Rugby Europe Championship

Romania 62 – 12 Belgium
Romania got three penalty tries on their way to victory, ensuring Georgia do not mathematically have the title just yet.  In the first half Romania got a penalty try, with further touch downs from Jack Umaga, Stelian Burcea, and Kuselo Moyake. Valentin Calafeteanu kicked two conversions and a penalty.  Belgiums only score in the first half was a try from Benjamin Cocu.
In the second half two more penalty tries and tries from Moyake, Ionuț Dumitru, and Ionel Badiu saw Romania win comfortably.  Cătălin Fercu and Florin Vllaicu each added a conversion. Belgium got a second try from Ervin Muric, converted by Antoine Vassart.  Both sides were down players at some stage, Romania had prob Ionel Badiu sent to the bin, while James PEarse and Amin Hamzaoui were shown yellow for Belgium.  Romania have won all 7 of their meetings with Belgium

Russia 9 – 29 Georgia
Georgia are now on a 17-match winning run against Russia, and have one hand on the trophy.  Russia led 9 – 7 at halftime with three penalties from Yuri Kushnarec. Georgias try came from Anton Peikrishvili, converted by Sosa Matiashvili.  
In the second half Matiashvili kicked a penalty and converted tries from KArlen Asieshvili, and Mikheil Gachechiladze.  Cruciall Merab Kvirikashvili crossed over for the bonus point.
The only way Georgia won’t win the title is if Romania beat them with a bonus point, with Georgia failing to take anything from the game.  

Spain 84 – 10 Germany
Wpain stormed to a win over Germany scoring 12 tries.  In the first half Mathieu Peluchon kicked two penalties and 3 conversions.  Pierre Barthère, Igacio Contardi Medina, Anibal Bonán, and Thibaut Álvarez all touched down, with Spain also getting a penalty try.  Germany had Falk Duwe sent to the bin.
Pelechon kicked three more conversions in the second half with Bradley Linklater adding a further two.  Spain got tries through Gautier Gibouim. Two from Fernado López Pérez, Thibaut Visensang, Bonán, Sébastien Ascarat, and Linklater.  Germany got a penalty from Daniel Koch, who then converted a Zinzan Hees try.
If Spain win against Belgium next week they will qualify as Europe 1.

Rugby Europe Trophy

Moldova 10 – 29 Portugal
Defending champions Portugal remain are top of the table.  They move up to 23rd in the world rankings.  Bottom place Moldova lost their 8th consecutive game.  They move down to 46th in the world rankings.  

Czech Republic 17 – 13 Switzerland
Czech republic move up to 31st in the world rankings with Switzerland dropping to 33rd.
