The opener didn’t go as planned for fans at the Sportsground but John O’Sullivan won’t lose heart…
There were debuts aplenty for Connacht in their 13-9 defeat against Cardiff on Saturday, but, unfortunately, the result had a similar story behind it, namely Connacht's lack of penetration. Indeed, it was the same last season, Connacht would enjoy large period of pressure, territory and possession but fail to make their dominance show on the scoreboard.
Many fans felt that the signings of Danie Poolman and Dan Parks would help rectify Connacht's profligacy but it just wasn't to be, despite the best efforts of debutants Mata Fafita, and young Robbie Henshaw. Connacht, particularly in the second half, threw the proverbial kitchen sink at Cardiff but every Green advance was met by rigid Blue's defence. Sadly, due to injury, the Connacht Clan will have to wait a little longer to see Dan Parks with an injury keeping the former Scotland star out of contention against his former club. Parks' replacement, Miah Nikora, will be happy with his place kicking, slotting all nine of Connacht's points, but, on reflection he'll feel his open play was poor.
As always, there are positives to take, including the debuts for the talented Robbie Henshaw and Willie Faloon. Also, Junior World Cup star Kieran Marmion will be happy with his early season exposure, the Welsh born scrum half has all the talent in the world and all in the Sportsground hope he fulfils the great potential with which he so clearly possesses.
Willie Faloon also made his competitive debut and, when he's fully settled in Galway, should prove to be an extremely shrewd acquisition. Connacht's next assignment will be a prelude to their Heineken Cup group, as they travel to Parma to take on new Italian franchise Zebre, The game, which takes place next Friday the 7th at 7:30, will provide Connacht with a first hand insight into Zebre's style and tactics. All in all, not a great start, but there are green shoots of growth to match Connacht's jersey.
