Here's some more about the show...
JOE PROP
By Gemma Doorly
‘In Joe we trust!’
Mill Theatre Dundrum (March 19th & 20th) Time: 8pm
Forget the World Cup or the Six Nations - the biggest rugby event of 2015 continues at the Mill Theatre Dundrum on March 19th and 20th and fans of the legendary Joe Kavanagh, the greatest tight head prop in world rugby, are in for a real treat as we are giving away two tickets to the show at the Mill Theatre.
Starring Fair City's Maclean Burke in a performance described by theIrish Independent as “moving and hugely energetic”, ‘Funny, engaging, poignant and beautifully acted’ Irish Mail on Sunday, ‘Suitable for 12+, this would be a great introduction to theatre for kids who have never been but adults will love it as well’ nomoreworkhorse.com, ‘Exceptionally well portrayed by Maclean Burke so sensitively written by Gemma Doorly’ Tony ward (Rugby Legend) - the show features voice over cameos from a host of rugby personalities including Ryle Nugent, George Hook, Brent Pope and lots of surprises!
‘Joe Prop’ is the story of 12 year old Joe Kavanagh, a boy with a dream - a dream big enough to overcome any obstacle. Medication for a childhood illness has left him overweight and a target for school bullies who among other things have dedicated a Facebook page to him called 'Fat Joe Kavanagh'. However, Joe finds solace on the school rugby team as a prop in the scrum.
Set in Joe's bedroom, a place far away from bullies, and illness, this is where Joe gets to be the greatest Tight Head Prop in world rugby and captain of a winning Irish Rugby World Cup team. The only witness to Joe’s dreams is his best friend and confidante - a bear simply known as ‘Teddy’.
CROUCH! BIND! SET!
Maclean Burke, who plays the eponymous hero said, ‘I was immediately connected to both Joe and his story. The comedy, the tragedy and uplifting power that is Joe’s ability to overcome any obstacle is heart-warming and draws you in and never let’s go until the final scene. I’m a big kid at heart and who doesn’t want to captain Ireland to a rugby world cup. I just feel so privileged to play this character and there’s a little bit of me in him. I think everyone can relate to him.’
Playwright Gemma Doorly said: ‘Joe Prop is the ultimate underdog story about a little boy’s determination to beat the odds and achieve his dream. I was inspired to write the play by the experience of a friend of mine who was bullied as a child but found solace in rugby. I am lucky to have my own dream team working on this play with actor Maclean Burke and director Karl Shiels. All three of us are like big kids when it comes to ‘Joe Prop’, but this is definitely a show for the kid in everybody – young and old’

The rugby match which will provide the winning square for this competition is Ireland’s Six Nations clash with Wales on Saturday, March 14, 2015.
The following extra rules are unfortunate but necessary.
- The winner will be announced on this blog post Saturday evening.
- The winner has until 12 noon on the following Tuesday to contact us via Facebook private message (by the account they used to qualify) otherwise the prize will be put on offer to one of the other entrants in a manner to be determined by the organising committee.
- only one entry per separate Facebook account is allowed each day, but it’s ok to enter once on each of the four days
- each window closes 3 hours after posting – if all of the spots are not all taken, the extra ones will be allocated in a manner to be determined by the competition organisers.
- when you are asked to leave an “exact phrase” this means you can use the phrase with OR without the quotes; also, since speed is a factor in the competition we will make allowances for typos once it is clear a decent attempt has been made to repeat the phrase
- for some windows “edited” Facebook comments will not be permitted as entries…this will be outlined as part of the post where it applies
- for transparency purposes your qualifying comment must remain on the social media post until at least two hours of completion of the rugby match that is to determine the competition winner.
- be aware that Facebook have been known to display comments in a random order on the web; as competition organisers we will do all we can to ensure the timeline is properly followed in each window.
- entrants’ positions on the grid are set and not open for discussion, nor are any other final decisions made by the competition organisers.
If you have any questions about the competition and/or its format or would like to sponsor one down the line, feel free to email we'd be happy to help.
BE SURE AND HAVE A GO AND BEST OF LUCK!!! JLP
