Elgon Cup
Uganda 18 – 23 Kenya
Kenya beat Uganda in the first leg of the Elgon Cup, named after Mount Elgon on the border of the two countries. Uganda were leading at halftime but failed to score in the 2nd half. Samson Onsomu and Martin Owilla scored Kenyas tries to add to the 13 points kicked by captain Darwin Mukidza.
The second leg will be played on June 24th, and will also be part of the Africa Rugby Gold Cup.
Rugby Americas North Championship
Guyana 24 – 17 Trinidad & Tobago
This win means Guyana top the South Zone division having already beaten Barbados. They will now play the winner of the North Zone on July 1st. It was Trinidad and Tobago who scored the first try when James Phillips touched down in the 9th minute. Guyana would hit back with two tries of their own to lead 12 – 5 at the break. Their lead was stretched to 12 points in the second half, until the 18th minute when Johnson Allen got Trinidad and Tobagos 2nd try. Avery Corbin secured the victory for Guyana with his 2nd try despite an overtime try from Samuel Roberts.
Next Saturday in the North Zone USA South take on Bermuda, and Cayman Islands play Mexico.
World Rugby Nations Cup
Spain 15 – 13 Namibia
A forgettable first half gave way to an enticing second half with both sides touching down in quick succession. Chrysander Botha scored the first try of the competition, before Lionesl Tauli responded for Spain. Tauli scored Spains 2nd try as well with Linklater adding the conversion to secure the win for Spain.
Argentina XV 38 – 39 Russia
Argentina raced into an early lead with two tries, but the game changed on an intercept try by Denis Simplikevich. The Russians added two more tries before halftime for a 22 – 12 lead. The sides exchanged tries in the second half and it looked like Argentina were on their way with ten minutes to go leading 38 – 29. However, Russia would touch down twice more late on to secure the victory. Russia move above Namibia to 19th in the World Rankings with this win.
Uruguay 30 – 21 Emerging Italy
Italy led 14 – 10 at the break as Uruguay went down to 14. The hosts took the lead in the 2nd half and stayed in front for the remainder of the match. Italy had a player sent off as Uruguay scored their 3rd try through Guillermo Lijtenstein. A penalty from Rodrigo Silva made sure of the victory.
