Newcastle have amassed a squad worthy of the top six instead of their annual relegation battle but they couldn’t recover from a 17-point deficit forged by Exeter’s scrummaging, innovative lineouts and individuals like the penalty-punishing Gareth Steenson and strong-running, oft-scoring no8 Sam Simmonds. Toby Flood guided the visitors to a deserved losing BP off the bench while the champions look well set for Europe though they’ll miss Jack Nowell who damaged his cheekbone ruling him out until November at least.
