Three times Montpellier went ahead thanks to powerful running and innovative finishing from the likes of Tomane and Nadolo; three times Exeter pulled back level thanks to efficient mauling and confident phase play from the likes of Whitten and Armand. Then after the Chiefs thwarted the home side’s search for a 5th try, a needless 70th minute Geli breakdown penalty under the posts allowed Steenson to grab the lead for good, setting up a pool-deciding December series against Leinster.
