Naas RFC–update #12

Roots & All is a project where we pick a few teams that don’t normally make the spotlight week in week out and feature them regularly throughout an entire campaign.

Naas hosted Rainey Old Boys at Forenaughts on Saturday (26th Jan) in their opening Ulster Bank League game of the year.

Having ended the year in second position Naas had since dropped to fourth place ahead of this game as their away fixture against Ards the previous weekend was called off due to adverse weather. Following some very heavy overnight rainfall the grounds crew at Forenaughts did an excellent job to ensure this fixture went ahead as scheduled but the strong gales throughout the game were to have a significant bearing on the final result.

With the wind at their backs Naas went in at halftime with a 19-5 lead thanks to 3 tries from the Naas left winger.

Whilst Naas may have been disappointed to have surrendered their halftime lead they will be pleased to have taken points off the league leaders, the only team so far in the league and were probably unlucky not to have secured a narrow win, 19 all probably the fair result.  Click here for the latest UBL Div 2B table.

Naas seniors are next in action on Saturday, 9th February when they travel to Hamilton Park in Newtownards to take on Ards. A win here would potentially move Naas back to second place in the league. They then travel to Sligo on the 16th and Armagh on the 23rd FebTheir next home game is scheduled for Saturday 2nd March against Nenagh Ormond.

Meanwhile the U21’s continued their winning form with a bonus point home win against IT Carlow 26-0.

The J1’s had an extra time win in the first round of the Leinster Provincial Towns Cup against Portarlington RFC and the reward is a home tie against Edenderry RFC on Sunday 17th Feb. They also had a superb away win against Bective 20-39 in the league which now see them sit on top of the league.

The U17s are in phase 2 of their premier league and need to win their next 2 matches to be in with a chance of qualifying for the semi finals of the Leinster League premier competition.

They are also in the semi final of the North Midlands against North Kildare with the winners due to play Cill Dara in the final.

The minis eventually got to play some rugby after all the bad weather and hopefully that will be the last of unplayable pitches for this season

The U11’s and U12’s are heading west to play Sligo on Saturday 16th and support the Senior Team in the AIL should be some trip!!
