Samoa were too undisciplined to challenge Japan, with three players sin binned. In the first-half Japan secured a penalty try and Yamada scored for a 20-0 lead, the first time in four-years Samoa failed to score by halftime. Japan made a questionable call late on, being 21-points up they opted to kick at goal rather than go to the corner. Failure to get a BP may cost them, but a solid defensive performance means the Brave Blossoms can still qualify.
