Challenge Cup Pool 2 Round 2 review

Lyon 27 – 24 Sale Sharks

At the Matmut Stadium de Gerland, Lyon overturned a halftime deficit to get their first win of this years tournament.  It was Lyon who took the lead with a penalty from Beauxis, Sale would respond with a try from Solomona.  Centre Sam James would add to that 6 minutes later.  Armitage got on back for Lyon, Sale led 10 – 14 at halftime.

James would get his 2nd try of the match 16 minutes into the second half to put Sale well in control.  They wouldn’t dee it out however as they were only able to add a penalty from De Klerk while Lyon rallied in the last 15 minutes.  Gill and Belan got over for tries to draw level and a penalty from Michalak sealed the victory.

Toulouse 15 – 17 Cardiff Blues

A poor start from Toulouse continued with defeat to Cardiff in their first ever home match in the Challenge cup.  A penalty from Ntamack put Toulouse ahead before Nick Williams touched down for Cardiff, the try was converted by Evans, who added a penalty 6 minutes later.  Toulouse would wrestle back the lead, Ntamack converted his own try before Dupont got over the line to put the French side 15 – 10 ahead.

The second half was a tense affair with the only scores coming from Macauley Cook, who got a try, and the boot of Jarrod Evans with the conversion.  Cardiff clung on and managed to see the game out.

This fixture was the first European Cup final back in 1996, Toulouse the victors on that occasion.

Cardiff top the pool with 9 points, Lyon are second with 4, Toulouse and Sale are both on 3 points.
