Challenge Cup Pool 5 Round 1 review

Some great work by regular contributor Ciarán Duffy, providing reviews of all matches in the opening round of the Challenge Cup.

We'll post them one day at a time throughout the week and so we can start with Connacht we'll work backwards from Pool 5.

Pool 5

Worcester Warriors 30 – 20 Brive

A first half hattrick from hooker Joe Taufete’e helped Worcester to a bonus point win.

It wasn’t plain sailing, as Brive went in front through a Guillaume Namy try.  Ugalde converted it and added a penalty in between Taufete’es three tries.  Worcester lead 17 – 10 at the break.

Namy got a second try but two penalties from Lance and a try from Waller ensured Worcester would win.  Brugnat would get a late try for Brive, but it wouldn’t be enough for a losing bonus point.

Oyonnax 15 – 43 Connacht

Connacht opened their Challenge Cup campaign with a bonus point win.

It was Oyonnax who opened the scoring with a penalty from Ruiz.  Connacht would respond with three tries from Healy, Kelleher, and McKeon.  Silvere Tian and Axel Muller would get two tries within 5 minutes for the hosts.  A penalty from Deegan ensured at halftime Connacht led 15 – 22.

Deegan opened the scoring in the second-half with another penalty.  Healy would get his second try of the game to ensure Connacht picked up a bonus point.  Deegan got two more penalties and Darragh Leader got a try in the final minute, while Oyonnax failed to score in the second-half.
