Japan came with an ambitious expansive game, for the most part dominated the scrums and had a reliable goalkicker in Goromaru but on the rare occasions the two sides had time to go at it without stoppages for penalties or yellows it was the Tongas who showed more class to apply the finish when required. Tries from Aulika and Vainikolo got them ahead and a patient series of phases at the very end led to a deserved 3rd via Takulua.
